Calming your Little Toddler

Babies cry. Now that your little angel has turned into a toddler, surely you’ve already accepted that as a reality of life as a parent. But sometimes, no matter how much you love your kid, you just wish there is a remote control made for babies that can mute their crying or turn their wailing volume down.

Unfortunately, such remote control only exists in the Adam Sandler movie but not in real life. However, the good news is there are various effective ways to calm your little whimpering darling.

First you must understand that your toddler’s needs are still similar to his needs when he was just a newborn. Even though at this time he may be able to speak a few gibberish syllables or sign a few words, crying is still his primary form of communication.

Most common source of distress for toddlers is hunger. A sign that will tell you he’s hungry is if he points out to his bottle while crying. Other toddlers will point at food or make hand to mouth gestures. After recognizing these signals, put on his bib, it’s time for some snack.

Another reason for crying is that baby may be tired. If he seems to have lost interest in his most favourite Toys for Toddler Girl, keeps on yawning, rubbing his eyes, or he does not have the energy to keep on jumping and jumping as he usually does, he’s probably looking for some time on the crib for some quality rest.

Your baby may also cry when he feels uncomfortable. Either feeling wet from a full diaper or hot from the humid weather, you’ll know he’s being fussy because of discomfort when his cries are accompanied by squirming and back arching. Try distracting him with his favourite toddler toys like his Baby Einstein Press and Play Pal while you look for the source of his misery and banish it completely.

Now if your child’s cry is sudden and shrill, it may be because he’s in pain or is sick. Right away check your baby’s temperature, and undress him completely to see if any skin got pinched or if ants got in his pants. Take him to his paediatrician if he is sick. Calm your hurt baby with his , a hug and an assurance that everything will be okay.

Toddlers also cry when they are over stimulated. If you’re in a place like in a shopping mall where it’s too noisy and a lot of people are swarming around him, your baby will cry because he misses the quiet comfort of your house. When this happens, remove baby from the scene, bring him to a more calm place, and try offering him his toddler toys or hugging him.

Toddler stage is also the time when your baby experiences separation anxiety and stranger anxiety. He cries when he can’t find you around, he cries when he finds himself being carried by a relative he has only seen for the first time. It’s good to always play peek-a-boo or hide and seek with your toddler at this time to teach him about object permanence, which means that when mommy covers her face or hides behind the couch, she’s still there and will return. Regarding stranger anxiety, before giving your baby to your aunt or cousin who wants to carry him, allow baby to warm up first by introducing him to your relative while he’s still in your arms.

Lastly, your toddler may cry because he is bored. Give your kid new to play with or take him outside for a stroll.

Your toddler cries because he wants to communicate something to you. By this time you probably are already familiar on the kind of cries that he makes and what these mean. Knowing and recognizing which of these needs he is crying about will give you an idea on how to respond to his crying.
